Jeaniene Frost

Hello everyone! LITERAL ADDICTION and Book Monster Reviews are proud to welcome the incredibly talented Jeaniene Frost to our sites today!

Jeaniene is the New York Times, USA Today and international bestselling author of the NIGHT HUNTRESS series and the NIGHT HUNTRESS WORLD novels.

Jeaniene lives in North Carolina with her husband and enjoy reading, poetry, watching movies, exploring old cemeteries, spelunking and traveling (by car) when she’s not writing. Airplanes, children and cook books frighten her.

From an early age Jeaniene was drawn to the strange. She would sneak out and watch horror movies at every opportunity, much to her parents’ dismay of course. At the tender age of 12 she began writing poetry. Shortly after that, she read her first romance novel, and it was love at first read! She knew she wanted to write her own novels someday, but figured she had plenty of time to do so. With that attitude, she didn’t actually start writing seriously until she was almost thirty.
When she finally sat down to do it, she knew it had to have her two favorite elements in it: urban fantasy and romance. Everyone has a favorite Supe Group. For Jeaniene it’s vampires. The first time she went to Sunday school, her minister pointed to the cross on the wall and asked her if she knew what it stood for. With all of the logic of an awestruck 5 year old, she seriously replied, “Yes, that’s what keeps the vampires away!” She’s been hooked on vampires ever since. :)

As mentioned, Jeaniene is the proud creator of the NIGHT HUNTRESS and NIGHT HUNTRESS WORLD series. The NIGHT HUNTRESS WORLD novels are a spin-off of the NIGHT HUNTRESS series, with plotlines and storylines continuing and overlapping NIGHT HUNTRESS.

Jeaniene’s new release, “Once Burned”, is the first book in another spin-off series, NIGHT PRINCE, and stars one of the most beloved characters of the NIGHT HUNTRESS and NIGHT HUNTRESS WORLD - Vlad Tepesh. “Once Burned” was released on 6/26/12 and we’re here today to help Jeaniene promote and celebrate.

For those of you new to Jeaniene’s work, we thought we’d give you the reading order and overlap of the series and related novellas/anthologies, as well as the synopses for a handful of them to get you up to speed.

“Halfway to the Grave”, NIGHT HUNTRESS Book #1:
Half-vampire Catherine Crawfield is going after the undead with a vengeance, hoping that one of these deadbeats is her father—the one responsible for ruining her mother’s life. Then she’s captured by Bones, a vampire bounty hunter, and is forced into an unholy partnership.

In exchange for finding her father, Cat agrees to train with the sexy night stalker until her battle reflexes are as sharp as his fangs. She’s amazed she doesn’t end up as his dinner—are there actually good vampires? Pretty soon Bones will have her convinced that being half-dead doesn’t have to be all bad. But before she can enjoy her newfound status as kick-ass demon hunter, Cat and Bones are pursued by a group of killers. Now Cat will have to choose a side… and Bones is turning out to be as tempting as any man with a heartbeat.

“At Grave’s End”, NIGHT HUNTRESS Book #3:
It should be the best time of half-vampire Cat Crawfield’s life. With her undead lover Bones at her side, she’s successfully protected mortals from the rogue undead. But though Cat’s worn disguise after disguise to keep her true identity a secret from the brazen bloodsuckers, her cover’s finally been blown, placing her in terrible danger.

As if that wasn’t enough, a woman from Bones’s past is determined to bury him once and for all. Caught in the crosshairs of a vengeful vamp, yet determined to help Bones stop a lethal magic from being unleashed, Cat’s about to learn the true meaning of bad blood. And the tricks she’s learned as a special agent won’t help her. She will need to fully embrace her vampire instincts in order to save herself—and Bones—from a fate worse than the grave.

“First Drop of Crimson”, NIGHT HUNTRESS WORLD Book #1:
The night is not safe for mortals. Denise MacGregor knows all too well what lurks in the shadows—her best friend is half-vampire Cat Crawfield—and she has already lost more than the average human could bear. But her family’s past is wrapped in secrets and shrouded in darkness—and a demon shapeshifter has marked Denise as prey. Now her survival depends on an immortal who lusts for a taste of her.
He is Spade, a powerful, mysterious vampire who has walked the earth for centuries and is now duty-bound to protect this endangered, alluring human—even if it means destroying his own kind. Denise may arouse his deepest hungers, but Spade knows he must fight his urge to have her as they face the nightmare together …
Because once the first crimson drop falls, they will both be lost.

“This Side of the Grave”, NIGHT HUNTRESS Book #5:
Half-vampire Cat Crawfield and her vampire husband Bones have fought for their lives, as well as for their relationship. But just when they’ve triumphed over the latest battle, Cat’s new and unexpected abilities threaten to upset a long-standing balance …
With the mysterious disappearance of vampires, rumors abound that a species war is brewing. A zealot is inciting tensions between the vampires and ghouls, and if these two powerful groups clash, innocent mortals could become collateral damage. Now Cat and Bones are forced to seek help from a dangerous “ally”—the ghoul queen of New Orleans herself. But the price of her assistance may prove more treacherous than even the threat of a supernatural war … to say nothing of the repercussions Cat never imagined.

“Once Burned”, NIGHT PRINCE Book #1:
She’s a mortal with dark powers…

After a tragic accident scarred her body and destroyed her dreams, Leila never imagined that the worst was still to come: terrifying powers that let her channel electricity and learn a person’s darkest secrets through a single touch. Leila is doomed to a life of solitude… until creatures of the night kidnap her, forcing her to reach out with a telepathic distress call to the world’s most infamous vampire…

He’s the Prince of Night…

Vlad Tepesh inspired the greatest vampire legend of all — but whatever you do, don’t call him Dracula. Vlad’s ability to control fire makes him one of the most feared vampires in existence, but his enemies have found a new weapon against him – a beautiful mortal with powers to match his own. When Vlad and Leila meet, however, passion ignites between them, threatening to consume them both. It will take everything that they are to stop an enemy intent on bringing them down in flames.

We know, it’s not nearly enough, and we STRONGLY suggest that all new readers check out the synopses for Jeaniene’s entire backlist (plus the other incredible things offered) at her WEBSITE. For now though, let’s get to the interview to learn some more about Jeaniene and her incredible books.

LITERAL ADDICTION/Book Monster Reviews: Hi Jeaniene! We’re so proud to have you here today and are very excited to help you promote the new NIGHT PRINCE series!

JEANIENE: Thank you so much for having me!

LITERAL ADDICTION/Book Monster Reviews: We always start by getting to know our guest authors a little bit better.

Q1): Can you tell us 3 things about yourself that we couldn’t find out easily on the Internet?

JEANIENE: Lol, probably not. There’s more information about me online than even my family knows.

Q2): What are 2 things that always make you smile, and 2 things that never fail to piss you off?

JEANIENE: My dogs and my husband always make me smile. Politics and injustice never fails to piss me off.

Q3): Some of the things that you enjoy doing when you’re not writing were listed in our Intro. We wanted to find out some more about a few of those things. What’s the best old cemetery you’ve visited, who is your favorite poet, and what was the last great movie you saw?

JEANIENE: Best cemetery, hmm, might be a tie between a historical one I saw in Baltimore (can’t remember the name) and Lafayette Cemetery in New Orleans. Favorite poet would be a tie between Poe and Shakespeare, and the last great movie I saw was The Avengers.

Q4): Are there any authors or titles that you feel may have influenced you to become the writer you are today? Why?

JEANIENE: Bertrice Small, because Skye O’Malley was my introduction to the romance genre; Dean Koontz, because Watchers turned me onto dark fantasy, Jackie Collins, because Changes made me love anti-heroes; Diana Gabaldon, because Outlander introduced me to strong, witty heroines written in first person point of view; and M.M. Kaye because The Far Pavilions made me get so lost in the story that I long to give my readers the same experience with my books.

Q5): If you could spend the day with any of your characters, who would you want to spend it with and what would you want to do?

JEANIENE: Heh. Have you seen what I do to my characters? I wouldn’t want to spend the day with ANY of them. As soon as they knew I was responsible for all their stress, pain and troubles, they’d try to kill me! ;)

Q6): What is your favorite type of scene to write – action, dialogue, sex, etc – and why?

JEANIENE: Dialog is my favorite type of scene to write. It flows the most naturally for me and I get a much better sense of my characters from it.

Q7): What is a typical writing day like for you? Do you have a routine that you follow? Are there specific things that you have to have with you to get the creative juices flowing, etc?

JEANIENE: My writing day varies depending on what’s going on. Right now I have a brand new release so most of my days are spent doing interviews (*wink*) and other promotional aspects, plus traveling to signings in different states. After this, it’s Crunch Time for my deadline so I’ll be glued to my computer for long hours. After that, it’ll be revision time, which means a mix of fixing the story and trying to spend time with the family I’ve neglected over the past several weeks. After that is trying to get my head around the next story I have to write while still doing promotion on the book recently published, interacting with readers through my various sites, dealing with business issues I’ve put off, and again, trying to remind my family that they’re a priority, too.
Whether I write or revise, however, I listen to a specific playlist of songs for each book. It helps keep me focused and tunes out some of the other distractions around me. For anyone interested in the playlist I listened to for Once Burned, it’s on my website here: http://jeanienefrost.com/2012/06/once-burned-playlist/

Q8): What’s your favorite inspirational quote?

JEANIENE: “Success is 99% perspiration and 1% inspiration.” It reminds me that even my dream job will always require hard work.

Q9): If they were to make a movie of your life, what do you think it would be titled?

JEANIENE: I have no idea. Even thinking about it makes me feel narcissistic :)

Q10): If your house was on fire, assuming it was safe, what book in your collection would you want to try and save from the inferno?

JEANIENE: AFTER I grabbed my dogs, my laptop, family photos, and important identity documents, I’d probably grab my Bible because I have notes of favorite quotes inside it. Then if I had time, I’d take books I’ve gotten signed by the authors.

LITERAL ADDICTION/Book Monster Reviews: O.K, now we’ll ask some questions directly related to the books…

Q11): Why did you feel that Vlad needed his own series (or the start of his own series) instead of just adding his book as an installment to NIGHT HUNTRESS or NIGHT HUNTRESS WORLD?

JEANIENE: I had more than one story in my head about Vlad and Leila. That’s only happened before with Cat and Bones, so I wanted to see where Vlad and Leila led me. Thankfully, my publisher supported me starting a new series instead of just writing another stand-alone spinoff.

Q12): Was there any specific inspiration that led to the creation of the NIGHT HUNTRESS series at the beginning?

JEANIENE: The original idea for Cat and Bones came from a dream where I saw a half-vampire woman arguing with a Master vampire man about why she’d left him years before. Wondering who those people were, what sort of world they lived in, and how they’d gotten to that point eventually became my first book, Halfway to the Grave.

Q13): Do you have a personal favorite in the saga thus far; maybe one that had deeper meaning for you when it was written, etc?

JEANIENE: Since Halfway to the Grave was the first book I ever wrote, it will always have a special place in my heart. But I’m fickle, so my favorite book is usually whatever I’m working on at the time, which in this case is Vlad and Leila’s second novel, Twice Tempted.

Q14): Is there a set plan for the upcoming releases, i.e which series will each new book belong to, how many are books planned for each series, etc?

JEANIENE: Right now my schedule looks like this: Once Burned (just released,) Twice Tempted, Night Prince book two in March 2013, then (tentatively titled) Up from the Grave, Night Huntress book seven in winter 2013, then either Night Huntress #8 or Night Prince #3, depending if I find that Vlad and Leila’s story will be a trilogy instead of ending at book two.

Q15): What were some of the challenges in bringing the world of NIGHT HUNTRESS to life?

JEANIENE: The first and biggest challenge is finishing a book. It’s easy to WANT to write a book, but a lot more difficult to stick to a story from Chapter One all the way to The End without getting distracted by another idea or simply not investing the effort needed to complete a book. Once you’ve accomplished that, you need to revise, revise, revise, which requires ruthlessness and more dedication. It’s necessary, however, because after that, your story needs to be strong enough to convince an agent or editor to give your novel a change over the thousands of others that have crossed their desks. Then once that’s accomplished, you hope and pray that readers will (a) find the book, (b) give you a chance by reading it, and (c) like it.

If this sounds daunting, it’s not meant to be, but it IS meant to be realistic. Many people have said to me, “I want to be an author because it sounds like fun!” Those people are in for a rude awakening, to be blunt. Wanting to become an author because it’s “fun” makes just slightly less sense than wanting to become a parent because it’s “easy.” If you love writing and you want to share your stories with other people, then welcome aboard this crazy ride! Win or lose, it’ll be worth it. But if you don’t love writing, win or lose, the uphill battle probably won’t be worth it to you.

Q16): What are some of the biggest surprises that you’ve encountered thus far?

JEANIENE: Realizing that as soon as I became an author, I lost my identity as a person to people who don’t know me In Real Life. For example, before I was an author, I could say that I loved a book without anyone thinking I had ulterior motives. Now when I recommend a book, it’s not unusual to hear things like, “Oh, she must be friends with the author” or “Her publisher told her to push that book” or “She’s sucking up hoping to get a favor from the other author.” It’s even worse if I mention that I DON’T like a book because then it’s really not unusual to hear things like, “She’s just jealous!” and “What did Author X ever do to her?” and “Guess Jeaniene thinks her stuff is so much better.” So my opinion as a person gets superseded by my profession, and I never expected that.

Q17): We don’t want you to stop writing about Cat & Bones, et al any time soon, but is there anything in the works outside of that world that you can share with us (no matter how high level)?

JEANIENE: I have several ideas that aren’t related to my vampire world, but once I’m done with Cat/Bones and Vlad/Leila, I don’t know which of them I’ll go with. By then, I might also have a new idea that demands to be written more than the others. We’ll see what happens!

Q18): Is there a question that you’ve thought it would be great to be asked in an interview but have never been asked? How would you answer that question?

JEANIENE: Interviewers are really thorough! Over the years, I’ve been asked so many questions that I think everything has been covered.

Q19): Would you like to say anything special to your readers and fans while we have you here today?

JEANIENE: I’d like to thank all of them for giving my books a try. Everyone has time and money constraints, so when someone spends one or both on something I’ve written, it’s a huge compliment. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

LITERAL ADDICTION/Book Monster Reviews: Jeaniene, thank you again for taking time out of your busy schedule to chat with us a bit. We’re VERY excited to help you promote the NIGHT PRINCE series as well as the rest of your backlist, and cannot wait to see what else you have in store for us. We’d love to have you back again sometime soon!

JEANIENE: Thank you for the interview and for having me on your site! I really appreciate it.

You can find Jeaniene online at her Website, Facebook, Twitter, and Goodreads.
